Evelyn for School Committee 2021

This week we welcomed the first woman of color into the White House as Vice President. She was sworn in by the first Latina to serve on the US Supreme Court. As Kamala Harris says, in many ways they are the “first, but not the last”. It has been an incredible privilege and honor to serve as the first person of color on the Belmont School Committee. I am proud to announce that I’m running to keep my seat on the Belmont School Committee.

I bring a perspective that isn’t always heard and rarely invited to join the conversation. It is because of this systemic silencing that I always aim to have a diverse representation of voices at the table, and seek them out if they are not there. As a friend of mine reminded me, “You talk about equity. You give people a seat at the table.” This is the single contribution to the school committee of which I am proudest. I work to realize equity for the students of Belmont and make an effort to amplify more voices.

I will continue to push to include a broad range of representation in our advisory committees and subcommittees. I will continue to lead the Equity Subcommittee to eliminate the opportunity gap we have in Belmont for students of color, students with disabilities, and our English Language Learners.

Given yesterday's tragic death of Henry Tapia here in Belmont, which is being investigated as a hate crime, it is of upmost importance that we recommit to our anti-racist work within the schools; our young black and brown students deserve to live in a Town without fear for their safety.

For the first time, I have a seat at the table, a voice in the decision making. I want to use that privilege to make sure we build a bigger table and pull up as many seats as possible!
